Meet Rajan, our elephant, who was retired
from a forest camp on a neighbouring island,
and now lives with us at the resort. Rajan,
like all the other elephants of the Andaman
Islands, is an open-ocean
swimming elephant. An exciting
experience (only when possible) is to join
Rajan for a swim in the waters off our resort
at Beach No. 7 or help him get his breakfast
early in the morning. Do remember, that Rajan
is quite old
at 58 years, and his health often does not
permit him to swim. He does not
like entering the water during the monsoon
months of May – October, and there is
never any guarantee that he will enter the
water at all during a guest’s stay.
As a policy, we will not force Rajan to swim,
if he is not up to the outing.

RAJAN |
Rajan,
the last domesticated swimming
elephant of the Andaman
Islands has been happy in
our care since 2004 when
he was left stranded after
a film shoot. A temple in
Kerala has now made an offer
of Rs.2.6 million (US$65,000)
and Rajan's owner has given
us one month to match this
offer or Rajan willl be
sold. At Havelock, Rajan
free-ranges in the forest
for 10 hours each day, is
well loved and very happy.
In Kerala, he will be in
chains year round, tied
to a temple wall and his
only outings will be walking
in procession
